OLATHE DISTRICT SCHOOLS WELLNESS PROGRAM KEEPS THE INSURANCE COSTS DOWN

Olathe district Board of Education members received welcome news at their September meeting when they learned that health insurance premium rates will increase only 3 percent for the 2010 calendar year.

This compares to a 12 percent increase in premiums the previous year and double-digit increases nationally. The district’s insurance broker said the Olathe district’s five-year average increase of 7.7 percent is far below the national average and attributed the savings to the district's innovative wellness program.

The Employee Wellness program, started 10 years ago, promotes a structure of organizational wellness through health screenings, exercise classes, stress management and nutrition classes, with incentives for employee participation.
