WEITZ CONTINUES MILITARY, GREEN BUILDING CONSTRUCTION - LOCAL CONTRACTOR COMPLETES TWO FORT RILEY PROJECTS

General contractor The Weitz Company recently completed two projects at Fort Riley, Kansas totaling $32 million:  the 132,000 square foot Army Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) Post Exchange, which represents $24 million and includes a variety of stores, restaurants and services; and the 18,000 square foot Combat Aviation Brigade Whitside Dining Facility, which represents $8 million and was built to achieve a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Rating for green construction and sustainability.

The Post Exchange, for use by Fort Riley soldiers, their families and military retirees, was designed by Marshall Waters Woody Architecture, Springfield, Missouri. The contract was administered by the AAFES Real Estate Division in Dallas, Texas. The Exchange, which was developed on a 9-acre site, will sell clothing and electronics, and include such services as a pharmacy, barbershop and spa. Its food court, with five restaurants and a Starbucks, will also be available to Department of Defense civilians.

The Whitside Dining Facility, a joint-venture, design-build project between Weitz and MaxFour Engineers & Architects, Denver, Colo., was administered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The U.S. Green Building Council awards LEED ratings for buildings that are considered to be green, energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable.  “With more than 100 LEEDÒ accredited professionals, we are pleased to offer the knowledge and expertise to meet the growing demand for sustainability and green construction,” said Aaron Bilyeu, Weitz’s national sustainability manager.  Located on a 5-acre site, the facility serves meals to 500 soldiers three times a day.

The grand opening of the Post Exchange is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 13, 2009.  For general information about the grand opening contact the Post Exchange at: 785-784-4094. Media wishing to attend should call the Fort Riley Public Affairs Office at 785-239-3410.
